Health And Safety Policy
Carpet Cleaning Brent Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out how Carpet Cleaning Brent manages the safety and wellbeing of our customers, employees, contractors and members of the public. Our aim is to provide professional carpet and upholstery cleaning services while maintaining the highest possible health and safety standards throughout every job.
Our Health and Safety Commitments
Carpet Cleaning Brent is committed to planning and delivering all services in a way that prevents accidents, injuries and damage to property. We comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and keep our practices under regular review to reflect changes in regulations, industry guidance and best practice.
Management is responsible for providing appropriate resources, training and equipment so that work can be carried out safely. Every member of staff is required to follow this policy and any related procedures as a condition of their work.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who ensure that safe systems of work are developed, implemented and reviewed. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring day-to-day activities, communicating safety requirements and checking that staff use equipment and products correctly.
All employees must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. This includes cooperating with risk assessments, following instructions, using personal protective equipment correctly and reporting hazards, near misses and incidents without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Risk assessments are carried out for our carpet, rug, upholstery and related cleaning services. These assessments consider hazards such as slip and trip risks, manual handling, electrical equipment, chemical exposure, confined spaces, noise, and interaction with customers and the public.
Based on these assessments, Carpet Cleaning Brent implements safe working procedures that address:
Planning work on site, including safe access and egress
Positioning and securing hoses, cables and equipment to reduce trip hazards
Using wet floor signage and barriers where necessary
Controlling ventilation when using cleaning solutions
Ensuring equipment is used within its design limits and manufacturer instructions
Safe loading, unloading and parking of vehicles in residential and commercial areas
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Our cleaning products and stain treatments are selected and used in line with relevant safety guidance. Material safety data sheets are obtained for each chemical, and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health assessments are completed where required.
We store chemicals securely, keep them clearly labelled and only decant into suitable containers. Staff receive training on safe use, correct dilution, avoiding contact with skin and eyes, and appropriate first aid measures. Where possible, we opt for low-toxicity and environmentally considerate products without compromising hygiene or cleaning standards.
Personal Protective Equipment
Carpet Cleaning Brent provides appropriate personal protective equipment to staff based on the task and risk assessment. This may include gloves, eye protection, protective footwear, coveralls and face coverings when necessary. Employees are instructed on how and when to use PPE, how to check it for damage and how to store it correctly.
PPE is considered a last line of defence and is used alongside safe systems of work, not as a substitute for them.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Our services often involve moving furniture, operating carpet cleaning machines and transporting equipment. Staff are trained in safe manual handling techniques to reduce the risk of back injuries and strains. Wherever practicable, mechanical aids or team lifts are used for heavy or awkward loads.
All equipment is maintained in good working order and inspected regularly. Defective machinery, accessories or cables are taken out of use until repaired or replaced. Electrical equipment is used with care to prevent electric shock or fire, and staff are trained to recognise warning signs of faults.
Protecting Customers, Premises and the Public
Health and safety is central to how we operate in customers homes, offices and commercial premises. Staff are trained to protect occupants and visitors by:
Clearly indicating areas that are being cleaned and may be wet
Positioning hoses and cables to minimise obstruction
Keeping all chemicals and equipment out of reach of children and pets
Working tidily to reduce clutter and trip risks
Maintaining respectful communication about any hazards or restrictions on site
Care is taken to protect furnishings, fixtures and fittings from damage arising from our work, and to leave areas clean, tidy and as dry as reasonably practicable at the end of each visit.
Training, Information and Supervision
All new staff receive health and safety induction relevant to carpet and upholstery cleaning before working unsupervised. Ongoing training is provided to cover new equipment, updated procedures and any changes in legal or industry requirements.
Supervisors monitor compliance with health and safety standards, provide additional guidance where needed and ensure that work is only undertaken by competent persons with suitable training and experience.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
Any accident, injury, near miss or significant hazard must be reported to management as soon as possible. We record incidents, investigate underlying causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures are in place for first aid, fire, chemical spills and other foreseeable incidents. Staff are instructed to prioritise life and safety, to alert emergency services when required and to evacuate areas where there is immediate danger.
Environmental and Public Health Considerations
Carpet Cleaning Brent recognises the close relationship between health, safety and environmental responsibility. We aim to minimise waste, avoid contamination of drains and watercourses, and dispose of waste materials in a lawful and responsible manner.
We work with customers to schedule cleaning at appropriate times to minimise disruption and to allow for adequate drying and ventilation after treatment, helping to maintain good indoor air quality and hygiene standards.
Monitoring and Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, equipment, products or applicable regulations. Feedback from staff, customers and other stakeholders is welcomed and used to improve our approach to safe working.
By following this policy and related procedures, Carpet Cleaning Brent seeks to deliver professional cleaning services in a safe, responsible and legally compliant manner, protecting everyone who may be affected by our work.
